What to Expect from an Automotive Technology Program

A trade school mechanic program (often called an automotive technology program) is built to prepare students for today’s auto service and repair industry. Most programs take about a year to complete and balance classroom theory with hands-on shop training. From engines and transmissions to brakes and suspension systems, you’ll learn the skills needed to begin a career as an automotive technician.

Program Goals

Mechanic training programs are designed around two main goals:
  1. Job readiness – giving students the skills needed to qualify for entry-level positions in repair shops and dealerships.
  2. Certification prep – preparing students for exams like the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and the EPA 609 Air Conditioning Technician exam.

Common Courses

A well-rounded program blends classroom learning with shop time. While course lists vary by school, you can expect subjects such as:
  • Engine Theory & Performance
  • Automatic & Manual Transmissions
  • Electrical Systems & Diagnostics
  • Brake Systems & Suspension
  • Fuel Systems & Emission Control
  • Hybrid & Alternative Fuel Technology
  • Preventative Maintenance & Shop Procedures
To help you prepare, we’ve created ASE practice tests that mirror what you’ll encounter in the classroom and on certification exams. [button link="https://toptrade.school/trade-school-finder/" type="big" color="green" newwindow="yes"]Connect with a School![/button]

Hands-On Shop Training

Beyond the classroom, students spend significant time in modern auto labs working with the same equipment used in today’s garages. This hands-on training introduces you to real-world wear and tear on vehicles, helping you build confidence before stepping into the workforce.
  • Automotive lifts and brake lathes
  • Computerized alignment and diagnostic systems
  • Pneumatic and hand tools
  • Engine hoists, valve grinding, and wheel balancing equipment
