Depending on whether you go to trade school or community college, the time it takes to complete your welding program can be anywhere from six months to two years. A six-month program normally earns you a certificate. You can earn a diploma in about one year and an associate degree program takes two years to complete. If you choose underwater welding, that’s an additional one year program, as well.

How Long Is Welder Training?

  • Certificate or Diploma Program Length: Six months to one year.
  • Associate Degree Program Length: Two years

Welder training doesn’t end once you finish school; you’ll still have to complete an apprenticeship or some other type of job training. Expect an additional few months to over a year for your on-the-job training. There are many companies that will pay you a salary while you learn, though usually a fraction of what a journeyman welder earns. But no worries, you’ll get to that rank before you know it.

Welder Training Cost

  • Certificate or Diploma Cost: $15,000-$20,000 for tuition. School supplies, other expenses, housing (if needed): up to $10,000.
  • Associate Degree Cost: $25,000-$40,000 for tuition. School supplies, other expenses, housing (if needed): up to $10,000.

Total costs are averages based on official data and partner school research, and we are not considering your welding financial aid options. Things such as location of school, tools, and extra specialized training can affect these prices and make them vary more widely. Contact your local trade school’s admissions rep to get the exact costs of their welding program.
