An auto mechanic’s job is to diagnose and fix cars, light trucks, and other types of vehicles. But through specialized training, some mechanics may focus on tires, brakes, on-board computerized equipment, or engines.

Most employers want their auto mechanics to have some sort of mechanic training behind them, here’s what you’ll need to do to become one:
- Get your high school diploma or GED.
- To heighten your chances of getting a job, you’ll need some post-secondary education and training.

How Much Money Does an Auto Mechanic Make?
In 2023, auto mechanics earned a mean annual wage of $51,940. The lowest 10 percentile of mechanics made $30,600, and the top 10 percentage of mechanics earned $77,630 or more. This salary information was taken from the BLS and last updated 4/22/24.
If you’re working at a dealership or for the manufacturer, you’ll earn a commission instead of a salary. This is called a “flat rate” or “flag hour” structure where you get paid based on the work you’ve completed. It’s pretty common for mechanics who work hourly to work overtime. Mechanics also tend to work evenings and weekends too.
